Distracted Machines
(A sequel to The Intact and the Flightless)
The Intact brought a gift.
The Flightless didn’t want it.
Other odd birds saw their chance and escaped.
The Flightless built flying machines to catch them.
All odd birds swooped and zigzagged, red sparkling in blue.
Most machines flew in only one direction at a time.
Except for a few.
The distracted ones spun and spiraled.
They could have captured the birds.
Instead, they flew higher.
And lived free together.
Seasons passed.
One day, a half-bird, half-machine appeared.
What made this little guy so strange?
He was born with a GIANT beak!
